Tapping a Specialty Tool

In the 1880’s the Swiss Army decided they required a more efficient knife for their soldiers. The army needed more than just a blade or two, they also wanted a screw driver so the soldier’s rifle could be stripped and reassembled as well.

Karl Elsener, the founder of a cutlery and surgical tool works in the Swiss village of Ibach was commissioned for the task.  His design also included a can opener and corkscrew – and was forward thinking for its time.
